Crack cocaine is a chemically altered form of cocaine that is smokeable. It is cheaper than cocaine, has the same effects as powder cocaine, except those effects are much more intense. Also, whereas marijuana (THC) takes up to 20 minutes to reach the brain, powder cocaine takes 3-5 minutes, crack takes just 5-8 seconds!
In Ohio, even the smallest amount of crack cocaine is a felony. Crack cocaine has no recreational (non-habit, non-addictive) use. It is so potent that one must assume the user is dependent. Immediate intervention is required.
Our firm will almost always refer the client to a licensed drug and alcohol counselor for a full assessment. If our client has been in treatment or counseling in the past, we will request the complete treatment records to review. We can then refer our clients to outpatient, inpatient, or even long term residential care.
Unlike alcohol or marijuana, any evidence of this drug is all you need to know to assume the worst. From a defense lawyer’s perspective, legal intervention can occur by requesting treatment in lieu of conviction (in Ohio known as “Intervention in Lieu of Conviction).
ILC generally involves a court-approved plan that typically lasts one year. Upon successful completion, the charges are dismissed. Failure of the program subjects the client to a prison sentence.
